Protect Your Beloved Garden Fishpond in Winter
Posted on: Friday, Nov 12, 2010
For many the idea of creating their own fishpond in their garden is a dream element. However, after all the work, sweat and tears have been spent one event that is not considered comes along, a freeze. Once snow starts to fall, and ice begins to form you need to take some steps to keep the fish alive and swimming to see a new day.
First, confirm that your pond is at least three feet deep. With any luck it will not completely freeze, and the fish will have ample space under the ice to hibernate. However, if the pond does appear as though it will freeze through and through, then create a hole with a warm pot of water on the ice. Once a hole has been formed dangerous gasses can be released.
If you know the pond is not at least 3 ft deep, or that it will freeze, bring the fish inside for the winter. Also note, by leaving the ice in frozen water, and breaking the ice you can kill the fish.
